Houston vs UAB Preview

Houston (29-5) seeks a return to the Final Four, but UAB (27-7) has other ideas.

The Houston Cougars made a run to the Final Four last year, and this team added a transfer from UConn. UAB comes into the game with a strong defense and could make another No. 5-No. 12 seed upset happen.

The Blazers beat South Carolina in non-conference play during the regular season. UAB enters the tournament on a seven-game winning streak.

Offensively, the Blazers have the sixth-highest scoring output in the nation with 80.7 points per game. The Blazers slow down teams, too, and allow 66.3 points per game. UAB ranks seventh  in steals nationally with 9.6 steals per game.

Houston also boasts one of the best defense in the country with 58.9 points allowed per game — third in the nation. The Cougars average 5.2 blocks per game, 14th in the country, and 39.2 rebounds, 23rd in the nation.

Offensively, the Cougars score 75.8 points per game. That ranks 53rd in the nation.

Notable wins non-conference wins for the Cougars this season include Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Oregon. The Cougars also played Wisconsin tough in a 65-63 loss in November 2021.

Houston Leaders

Leading scorer Marcus Sasser averages 17.7 points per game. Sasser also averages 2.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.2 steals per night.

Kyler Edwards leads the team in assists with 3.2 per game. Edwards also averages 13.6 points, six rebounds, and a steal per night.

Josh Carlton leads the Cougars in rebounds with 6.4 per game. Carlton also averages 12 points and 1.2 blocks per night.

UAB Leaders

Jordan Walker leads UAB in scoring with 20.4 points per game. Walker also averages 4.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.5 steals.

Trey Jemison leads the Blazers in rebounds with 7.4 per game. Jemison also averages seven points and 1.6 blocks per night.

Quan Jackson also puts up solid numbers for the Blazers. He averages 12 points, 5.9 rebounds, two assists, and 2.4 steals per game.
