Delaware vs UNC Wilmington Preview
Two CAA squads seek to end short NCAA tournament droughts in a conference championship showdown on Tuesday. Delaware hasn’t made the Big Dance since 2014, and the UNC Wilmington Seahawks look to return for the first time since 2017.
The Blue Hens beat Towson 69-56 on Monday in the semifinals to advance. Kevin Anderson led the Blue Hens with 17 points.
“Just to make it to the championship, I’m just happy, but the job’s not done,” Anderson said per Kevin Tersolini of the Delaware News Journal.
UNC Wilmington beat Charleston 60-57 on Monday to reach the final. Jaylen Sims led the Seahawks with 26 points.
“That was a grind-it-out, physical war, and we knew it would be,” UNCW head coach Takayo Siddle said according to Dan Spears of the Wilmington StarNews.
UNC Wilmington and Delaware could have a similar feel after two close regular season contests. The Seahawks beat the Blue Hens 70-68 on Dec. 29, 2021 and found the upper hand again on Feb. 26 in a 69-62 victory.
“They know who we are as a program, we never get too high, get too low. We kinda stay in the moment,” Siddle said per Spears. “Ever since I’ve taken over the job, we’ve talked about winning the day.”
UNW Wilmington ended the regular season on a three-game winning streak, and the Seahawks will look to keep their winning ways going.
Delaware stumbled into the tournament after back-to-back losses to end the regular season. The Blue Hens lost close games to Charleston and UNC Wilmington in late February. Anderson said things have changed since.
“We’re playing tough,” he said according to Tresolini. “We’re showing real toughness right now. We’re not letting up and we’re getting leads and we’re not just settling down and slowing up.”
Anderson scores 11.1 points per game, fourth on the team. He also posts 3.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per night.
Jameer Nelson leads the Blue Hens in scoring with 13.8 points per game. He also averages five rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per contest.
Dylan Painter posts 12.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.1 blockers per game. Ryan Allen averages 11.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per night.
Sims leads the Seahawks in scoring with 16 points per game. He also averages 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and a steal per night.
Florida transfer Mike Okauru has provided a spark for the Seahawks with 12.7 points per game. He also posts 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per contest.
Fellow transfer, James Baker Jr., averages 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 blockers per game. The former Morehead State player shoots a team-best 56.8% from the field.
