Wagner vs Bryant Preview
Bryant seeks its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance when meeting Wagner on Tuesday. The Wagner Seahawks look to end a 19-year NCAA tournament drought.
“You gotta win three games in March, we’ve been knocking on the door for years,” Wagner head coach Bashir Mason said per NJ Advance Media’s Adam Zagoria. “I’m just hoping this is the year.”
The Bryant Bulldogs already won the NEC regular season title with a 78-70 win over Wagner on Feb. 26. Peter Kiss led Bryant with 23 points in that win.
“I’ve had the opportunity — two chances now — to go to the NCAA Tournament,” Kiss said per Bill Koch of The Providence Journal. “I’m ready and excited. I think those are the two words that come to mind for tomorrow’s game.”
Bryant fell in the NEC championship to Mount St. Mary’s last year. The Bulldogs ousted Mount St. Mary’s this time around in the semifinals 70-69 on March 5.
“Getting back there is one thing, but finishing the job is another,” Kiss added per Koch. “It’s nice that we’re back here, but we’d like to change the outcome this time around. We’re going to do everything in our power to do that.”
Kiss, the top scorer in the nation, averages 24.7 points per game. The Bulldogs also have the top rebounder in the CAA with Charles Pride averaging 8.3 boards per game.
“We play with a chip on our shoulder and an edge — that’s who we are. But I want our guys to enjoy this and go play and go play free. The magnitude of the game is what it is,” Bryant head coach Jared Grasso said per Koch.
The Bulldogs haven’t lost since Feb. 12 in a 75-61 loss to Central Connecticut. Since, the Bulldogs have won six straight.
Wagner lost its final two regular season games but turned things around in the tournament. The Seahawks routed St. Francis 82-53 on March 2 and Long Island 82-62 on March 5.
Wagner notably lost third-leading scorer Elijah Ford, who averaged 11.8 points per game, to an ACL tear on Feb. 5. The Seahawks have been using that as motivation.
“Just to get it done for him, to see his smile bigger than it’s ever been, it’s extremely important,” Morales said about Ford per Zach Braziller of the New York Post. “Even more important than when he was playing. It pushes me more. It’s motivation.”
