Google and Provo, Utah Mayor John Curtis announced on Wednesday that Google Fiber is coming to Provo, Utah. the third city to get its high-speed Internet service via fiber-optic cables. Provo is filled with hundreds of tech companies and startups, most of them based in Provo. According to Google’s blog, Provo, Utah is ranked as “one of the top places to live and do business in the U.S.”
To bring Google Fiber to Provo, Utah, Google signed an agreement to purchase iProvo, a fiber-optic network that already exists and owned by the city. Google’s agreement with Provo hasn’t been approved and is pending a vote, which is scheduled by the City Council for next Tuesday, April 23rd. Once the deal is closed Google plans to upgrade the networks. Back in 2004, Provo started to build their own municipal network and decided that providing high-speed internet was important to their community.
