Her is directed by Spike Jonze, the guiding force behind Being John Malkovich and Where The Wild Things Are. Taking place in the distant future, the story follows Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly recovering from a recent divorce. Setting up a new computer system in his apartment, Theodore “connects” with Samantha.
Voiced by Scarlett Johansson, the AI is similar to Siri and provides Theodore the company that he needs. Amy Adams (as a blonde) pops occasionally implying that she’ll be a competitor in this bizarre blossoming romance.
The odd tone fits perfectly into a typical Spike Jonze production with the various shifts in tone. The trailer quickly shift from an upbeat tune to a more melancholic beat demonstrates this story may not turn out the way we might expect. The topic of the movie is resonant with today based on the “Catfish” craze but this takes it to a whole new level. Warner Bros is rolling this out in a prime oscar season slot so clearly they hope it has some awards potential.
Her is opening in limited release on November 20th.
