Tumblr Bug Automatically Posts Porn on Profiles-That Can’t Be Deleted

Tumblr users awoke this morning to an unpleasant surprise on their profiles. Porn and other NSFW content ran rampant for many micro-blogs without users knowing. The material ranged from harmless to crude which can’t be deleted at this time thanks to it locking out users from their own sites.

Several people began complaining about the offensive content which caused Tumblr to finally issue the response seen above.

Fortunately, the issue affected a small number of blogs. The source of this issue turned out to be an infrastructure failure that lasted fifteen minutes based on the information CNET obtained from a Yahoo source. Also, the fact that this wasn’t a malicious hack and simply corrupt data is a good and bad thing.

The company’s last Twitter update was a few hours ago telling users that they were still working on the problem. Tumblr’s security is clearly improved since it was bought buy Yahoo but shows its recent porn sanctions may have some weaknesses. Techcrunch alludes to the fact that this problem is commonly associated with sites that host porn.
