Is Amazon Down? What Happened?

Amazon.com had an extensive, widespread outage this afternoon. People visited Amazon links that worked before, only to get error messages. Others were able to get the Amazon home page to come up, but only partially. Some people are reporting the problem is fixed, although some are still having issues with intermittent downtime, apps not working, or a slow site. The outage was widespread and people immediately turned to Twitter with their concerns.

According to reports from people on Twitter and Reddit, the problem was extensive. Everything was down, even Amazon Seller Central. Apps refused to connect and Amazon search didn’t work. Even Amazon web services were down, which caused outages with Tumblr, IMDB, and other sites.

Even the co-creator of Z Nation on Syfy joined the Twitter conversation with his own unique diagnosis:

The problem affected people who were accessing Amazon on the computer as well as on mobile, starting around 2:30 p.m. Eastern. According to DownForEveryoneOrJustMe, the issue was widespread:

The problem seems to be resolving. According to Amazon Web Services, everything is now operating normally. (Although DownForEveryoneOrJustMe is still reporting problems.) Maybe there was a huge increase in visitors after Amazon posted about all their deals shipping with a free cat bed:
