The Tesla Model 3 is ahead of schedule and the first 30 will be released in a party on July 28, Elon Musk has shared. But those who have reserved Tesla Model 3s are wondering when they’ll have a chance to customize their cars. Will a configurator ever be available online?

The answer is yes. If you’re wanting to customize your Model 3, you will have a chance to do so. It’s just not online yet.

During a Tesla shareholder meeting in June, Musk addressed this very question.

We expect that the configurator to go live towards the end of next month [July] when we deliver the first production Model 3. So yes, we are definitely on track to deliver the first production Model 3 next month.”

Since the shareholders meeting, Musk has announced that the first cars will be delivered on July 28. So the configurator should also go online around that same time.

In order to allow for rapid production, Musk added that they have kept initial configurations for the Model 3 very simple. That was a mistake they made with the Model X that they’re not repeating: “[The] Model X … has way too many cool things in it that should have been rolled in with Version 2, Version 3…”

When the configurator does go online, it’s going to be very simple. Musk told shareholders that customers will likely only be able to choose what color they want for their Model 3 and the size of the wheels. Electrek reported that Model 3 colors spotted in the wild so far are red, white, black, silver, blue, and Signature Red.
