1. This Is the Third Year in a Row That New York Won Miss America
Last year New Yorker Nina Davuluri won the title of Miss America and the year before, Mallory Hagan. This makes it the third year in a row that Miss New York has won the title.
2. Kira Was a Victim of Domestic Violence
Kira is actually a victim of domestic violence, which is why her platform is Love Shouldn’t Hurt: Protecting Women Against Domestic Violence. The incident occurred when she was in college and Kira stated:
It was something that definitely changed me. I’m better now and I’m stronger now. I want to show others they can handle it too.
3. She Plans to Attend Law School
Kira is a New York City girl who graduated from The Hofstra University and plans to attend Fordham Law School. While serving as Miss America, she will have to put off her enrollment. While in college, Kira majored in political science, global studies and geography. As for law school, she plans to practice international law.
4. Kira’s Parents Are Russian Immigrants
The Press of Atlantic City reported on Kira’s family life:
She is a first-generation American, the daughter of Russian immigrants, and recently visited Russia to see her family there. “My parents left for a better life,” she said. “They gave up everything to make a better life for me and my little brother.” Her recent trip, she said, made her even more appreciative of the opportunities she has. “It made me just appreciate the fact I am an American,” she said.
5. Her Talent Was Inspired by the Movie Pitch Perfect
Taking her cue from the song “Cups” in the movie Pitch Perfect, Kira used a cup as a prop in her performance of the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
