This Is Us returned last week with the great news that Toby survived his health scare on Christmas Day. Now, the hit NBC series is back with another look at the dramatic events that took place during the pilot episode. The new episode, titled “The Big Day,” airs on Tuesday, January 17 at 9 p.m. ET. Read on for a preview and a recap of what happened last week.

In “The Right Thing To Do,” the present scenes were made up of three storylines:

  • Kate had to convince her boyfriend Toby to get surgery to save his life and they both admitted that they love each other.
  • Kevin was confronted by the return of Olivia, who showed up just as his chemistry with Sloane convinced their director that Sloane could star in her own play. Kevin decided to stay with Sloane and to continue dating her. However, he alienated Sloane by telling Olivia that he felt obligated to do the right thing.
  • Randall tried to understand why William was spending so much time with Jesse and wasn’t as open with his family as he used to be. William revealed that his cancer medication is no longer working and did not want Randall, his wife and his daughters to see him in pain. Randall told William that he could stay at his home and they would stop chemotherapy.

In the past, Jack and Rebecca learn that they are expecting triplets and cannot live in the two-bedroom apartment they planned on staying in. Jack confronts his abusive father, asking him for money. Instead of telling his father the truth about his own growing family, Jack lies, telling him that the money is for gambling debts. Jack uses the money to buy an under-construction home, but doesn’t tell Rebecca that he asked for money from his father.
