At long last, a true 3D Mario adventure is upon us. Super Mario Odyssey has been heavily marketed by Nintendo and if the early returns are anything to go by, it’s for a good reason. After the good but not great Mario offering on the Wii U, Super Mario Odyssey is looking like it will represent a return to form for the series.

The main gimmick of this Mario title is the ability to take control of various objects with your hat. Mario’s hat, aptly named Cappy, has the ability to be thrown at things such as a Bullet Bill and that will allow you to take control of it and go places that were otherwise unreachable.

Co-op is also confirmed for the game but players won’t be taking control of Luigi. A Nintendo Treehouse livestream confirmed 2-player co-op is available in the game. The mode is similar to Super Mario Galaxy 2 and has one player controlling Mario while the other controls Cappy. After Mario throws Cappy, the other player can move it around and collect items like coins.

In terms of when you’ll be able to play the game, Nintendo will be releasing Super Mario Odyssey whenever October 27 hits in your region. This means it will be a midnight release no matter what part of the world you’re in. This is a common occurrence with Nintendo games and Super Mario Odyssey will be no different.

Of course, it’s not really a new Nintendo game without new amiibo is it? New amiibo figures of Mario, Peach, and Bowser in wedding attire are coming and will be releasing alongside the game. Each amiibo figure grants Mario different power-ups in the game. The Mario amiibo grants temporary invincibility, the Peach amiibo grants a Life-Up Heart, and the Bowser amiibo reveals regional coin locations.

Super Mario Odyssey will no doubt be one of the biggest games of the year so stay right here with us for continued coverage of Mario’s newest adventure. Super Mario Odyssey releases exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on October 27.
