Alfie Boe is an English tenor and actor who’s appeared in a number of operatic productions, including Les Misérables and La Bohème, and has released several top-10 albums. He’ll also be singing “Abide With Me” at this year’s FA Cup Final.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. He’s Singing ‘Abide With Me’ at This Year’s FA Cup Final
The 41-year-old Alfie Boe will sing Abide With Me before the start of this year’s FA Cup Final, accompanied by a choir of 64 football fans from each team that made it to the 3rd Round of this year’s FA CUp and selected by the BBC’s Songs of Praise program.
Abide With Me has been sung before the start of every FA Cup final since 1927.
Boe is a Liverpool fan.
2. He Used to Be a Bit of a Boozer
Boe has admitted to having had a drinking problem and suffering from depression, and is now tee total.
Boe told the Daily Mail that while a student at London’s Royal College of Music he “went to Ronnie Scott’s one night and drank myself stupid, vomited all over myself in the back of a cab and woke up face-down on the floor in the college hall, really scared.”
He also performed a gig in Amsterdam while stoned: “Beforehand, I went to a coffee shop to play pool and had some coffee and cakes. I didn’t know they were hash cakes… I don’t know how I pulled off the gig, but I did.
3. He’s Performed on Broadway, and for the Queen
Boe appeared in Baz Lerman’s production of La Bohème in 2002, receiving a 2003 Tony Award alongside the other cast members. He’s also appeared in Les Misérables at London’s O2 Arena and The Mikado with the English National Opera, as well as an episode of the TV show Mr Selfridge.
Boe is perhaps most famous in the UK for performing at The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, singing a number of songs including “Somewhere”, from West Side Story, on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
4. He’s Worth $5 million
In addition to his roles in opera and on television, Boe has released eight albums, four of which reached the Top 10 in the UK album charts and two of which went platinum.
Taking his operatic appearances, album sales and acting career into account, Boe is estimated to have a net worth of $5 million.
5. He’s Married to Sarah Boe (and His Best Buddy is Matt Lucas)
Alfie met his wife Sarah Boe (nee: Jones) while performing La Bohème in San Francisco, and they tied the knot in 2004. Sarah is an American Shakespearean actress and lives in Salt Lake City with their two children: Grace and Alfred Jr.
Born in Blackpool in the north of England, these days Boe splits his time between the US and UK. When back home Boe hangs out with his best buddy, comedian Matt Lucas. The pair have produced a string of YouTube hits singing at Lucas’ kitchen table.
