The preseason is set to kick off Thursday night and the Detroit Lions and New York Jets square off at Ford Field in Week 1. The starters will get about a quarter of playing time before making way to players looking to cement their place on the roster.
New York didn’t expect to have to rely on Ryan Fitzpatrick to play a meaningful chunk of the season, but after Geno Smith’s run-in with a former teammate, Fitzpatrick will at least have to play the first few weeks of the regular season.
The 32-year-old has had an up-and-down career, but the former Harvard product has a career 60.2 percent completion percentage and 123 touchdown passes. Fitzpatrick made 12 starts for Houston last season; the Texans went 6-6 in those games. Will a quarterback controversy arise once Smith is completely healthy?
The Lions have no such problems at the most important position. Matthew Stafford is coming off arguably his best season and is finally starting to develop the maturity of a franchise quarterback. Stafford has averaged 40.2 passing attempts per game in his career to date, a remarkably high number even in this pass-happy era.
