The New York Jets are ready to start hitting on the football field.
Gang Green’s defense may not look exactly like the Rex Ryan-designed attack of old, but it’s a group that is still expected to hit and hit hard. In fact, there are some within the Jets organization that think New York can be the top defense in the league. Really. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson told reporters on Friday afternoon he believes the Jets can set the defensive pace of the entire NFL, adding “…we can be as good as we want to be. We can be great. We can have the No. 1 defense in the league.”
Of course, there’s reason to be optimistic. Those reasons are named Darrell Revis and Antonio Cromartie. First-year coach Todd Bowles has effectively revamped Jets secondary to become a lean, mean, potentially-intercepting team, buoyed by the return of the two free agents. You can bet that the Jets secondary is anxious to prove how far its come this afternoon with a season-opening matchup at home against the Cleveland Browns.
The Browns, who haven’t won a season-opener in a decade, are determined to find some offensive rhythm early this year thanks to a brand-new passing attack from offensive coordinator John DeFilippo and a renewed sense of purpose on the offensive line. Josh McCown is slated to get the start under center for Cleveland, while Johnny Manziel has said he’s ready to go should the situation call for him on Sunday afternoon.
