Sparks could fly in the first ever final between Manchester City and Liverpool, a matchup that has been entertaining in recent years. Most recently Liverpool thrashed City 4-1 at the Eithad, but that match featured a watered-down City lineup. Now at nearly full strength, City look to add a second League Cup to Manuel Pelligrini’s mantle before his departure.
Liverpool are seeking their first Cup under Jurgen Klopp, but the Reds are no stranger to hoisting the League Cup. Liverpool will be playing in their 12th Cup final today, and have won the competition a record eight times. History aside, Bovada has them as the underdog today at +195. City are only slight favorites at +130, but the promise of scoring makes other bets more appealing than the winner.
In the last eight matches across all competitions, these times have combined for 32 goals. Neither has recorded a clean sheet in any of those meetings. Over 2.5 goals is a solid bet at -115, and bolder bettors can go for over 4.5 at +475.
Sergio Aguero has been on fire recently, and he’s priced accordingly to score anytime at +125. Philippe Coutinho was outstanding when the teams met in November, and he’s a riskier option at +300.
Liverpool may have history on their side, but City are the ones prepping for a title chase and Champions League run. If Vincent Kompany is on the field, I’m backing City to win. If he can’t go, I’m moving that money to the over.
