Boxer Jermain Taylor Arrested on Battery Charges

Jermain Taylor arrested

Former boxer Jermain Taylor has been arrested on battery charges, according to Angela Rachels with KATV 7.

“Taylor’s arrest stemmed from an argument with a woman. Woman said Taylor chased her down the street threatening to kill her. Woman also said she pepper sprayed Taylor trying to get away. Police saw bite marks on the woman when they arrived,” Rachels said in a series of tweets.

This isn’t the first time that Taylor has found himself in trouble with the law. Last year, he avoided jail time following several felony charges over three different incidents in Arkansas, according to ESPN. Not only did he shoot a gun during a parade, he was also charged with “shooting and wounding his cousin and punching a fellow patient at a rehabilitation clinic.”

“I made a lot of mistakes. I just want to apologize to my state, to my kids and my cousin and my family. I’ve made some mistakes but I’m trying to come back,” Taylor said before his sentencing. A 19-year sentence was suspended by Pulaski County Circuit Judge Leon Johnson (other reports indicate that he was given a 6-year suspended sentence). That meant that as long as Taylor kept himself out of trouble, he wouldn’t have to serve time. His latest arrest could change that decision and could see him serving time behind bars, depending on the outcome.

Just last month, Taylor was due in court to face the cousin that he shot. Tyrone DaWayne Hinton was left in critical condition following the 2015 incident with Taylor. Hinton decided to file a lawsuit against the athlete, according to USA Today. Since Taylor was a no-show, the Pulaski County Circuit judge overseeing the case ruled in favor of Hinton. The amount of money that Taylor will have to pay his cousin will be revealed at a later date.

Taylor earned the title of professional middleweight boxing champion in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
