Nyquist pulled off the upset to win the 2016 Florida Derby. Mohaymen entered the race as the favorite but had a disappointing fourth place finish.
The 2016 Florida Derby was one of the most anticipated races leading up to the Kentucky Derby in recent memory. It featured the two favorites to win at Churchill Downs squaring off with just over a month before the big race.
Both horses entered the race undefeated and the matchup was being billed as East vs. West.
Mohaymen had the advantage of running on his home track while Nyquist traveled all the way from Santa Anita, California. Despite the cross country travel, Nyquist was able to come up with the slight upset and pulled away from the field after the final turn.
Nyquist had an opportunity to win a $1 million bonus by winning the Florida Derby while the pot was $600,000 for Mohaymen. With the bonus, Nyquist won $1.6 million at the Florida Derby.
Nyquist will head to the Kentucky Derby as the betting favorite to win at Churchill Downs. Mario Gutierrez is the jockey while Doug O’Neill is the trainer for the Reddam Racing horse.
