The 59th annual Daytona 500 is going to look a little different than the rest.

As will be the case throughout the entire 2017 NASCAR Cup Series, the race will be divided into three stages. While the length of stages will vary depending on the track during the season, the Daytona 500 will feature two 60-lap stages and an 80-lap stage, with a competition caution after the completion of the first two.

In addition to the regular points being awarded at the end of the race, points will also be given out based on order at the completion of each of the first two stages.

Here’s a complete rundown of how those points will be divvied up:


2017 Daytona 500 Points System

Completion of Stage 1 (60 Laps)

1st: 10 points
2nd: 9 points
3rd: 8 points
4th: 7 points
5th: 6 points
6th: 5 points
7th: 4 points
8th: 3 points
9th: 2 points
10th: 1 point

Note: The above points are reset going into the final 10-race playoff, but the winner of the stage will be rewarded one bonus point to start the playoffs


Completion of Stage 2 (120 Laps)

1st: 10 points
2nd: 9 points
3rd: 8 points
4th: 7 points
5th: 6 points
6th: 5 points
7th: 4 points
8th: 3 points
9th: 2 points
10th: 1 point

Note: The above points are reset going into the final 10-race playoff, but the winner of the stage will be rewarded one bonus point to start the playoffs


Completion of Stage 3 (End of the Race)

1st: 40 points
2nd-35th: 35 points down to 2 points, rewarded inversely
36th-40th: 1 point

Note: The above points are reset going into the final 10-race playoff, but the winner of the race will be rewarded five bonus points to start the playoffs
