The Philadelphia Eagles were in dire straits heading into their Monday Night game with the last-place New York Giants, desperately needing a win to keep pace in the NFC East division race.
Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was already working with a debilitated receiving corps and the situation may have turned even bleaker on Monday, despite their dramatic come-from-behind overtime win.
Wentz’s top target, wide receiver Alshon Jeffery went down with what appeared to be a foot injury in the second quarter.
Jeffery took off from the line of scrimmage to start a route in the second quarter and pulled up limping.
The 29-year-old was carted to the locker room and the Eagles ruled him out for the rest of the game. He was targeted twice and held without a catch.
Alshon Jeffery to Miss Rest of Season With Foot Injury
If the Eagles go on a run to make the postseason, they’ll have to do it without Alshon Jeffery.
Philadelphia’s No. 1 receiver will miss the remainder of the 2019 season, according to the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Jeffery will need further testing to determine the severity of the foot injury he suffered on Monday night but won’t be ready to return this season.
Alshon Jeffery Has Struggled to Stay on Field
Jeffery has only managed to play a full 16-game regular-season once in the last five years, which came in his first season with the Eagles in 2017. He has missed at least three games in four of the last five years.
Wentz’s top receiver dealt with an ankle injury earlier this season which he suffered in the Eagles’ 22-14 win over the Chicago Bears back on Nov. 3.
Jeffery finally looked like he was primed to turn the corner after posting a monster game last week against the Miami Dolphins when he caught nine passes for 137 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ 37-31 loss.
Eagles Overcome Injuries, Save Season with Dramatic 23-17 Overtime Win
With the Eagles’ season all but hanging in the balance, Carson Wentz delivered Philadelphia to an improbable comeback win, beating the Giants 23-17 in overtime.
Wentz, playing with a limited supply of offensive weapons after Jeffery went down, took the Eagles on his back and rallied them from a 14-point deficit in the second half.
The 26-year-old led the team on two clutch drives, an 85-yard march to tie the game late in the fourth quarter and a 75-yard drive to win the game in OT.
One of the Eagles’ lone-remaining healthy stars, tight end Zach Ertz, caught the game-tying TD with 1:53 to go in regulation and the winning score in overtime.
Wentz finished with 325 passing yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles improved to 6-7.
With the win, Philadelphia drew even with the Cowboys atop the NFC East and now controls their own destiny. The Eagles would clinch the division by winning their final three games against the Redskins (Dec. 15), Cowboys (Dec. 22) and Giants (Dec. 29).
