After rumors that the New York Giants offensive coordinator search would go into the weekend, the G-Men have shifted gears, making an official hire on Friday night per reports.

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Big Blue has come to an agreement with former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett to be their next offensive coordinator.

Upon hearing of the hiring, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that following Garrett’s interview earlier this week, the feeling in the building was that he and head coach Judge were set on working together, but that he wanted to check with his family first before making a final decision.

Apparently, his family has signed off, and as NFLMock’s Dan Shea claimed, Joe Judge “got his guy.”

What Can We Expect From a Jason Garrett Run Offense in New York?

The New York Giants offense has been at or near the bottom rung of NFL units for much of the time in recent memory. For the past four seasons, the Giants have failed to rank within the top half of the league in total offense.

While Garrett may have his shortcomings when it comes to being a head coach, his resume as an offensive coordinator is actually quite impressive.

Before being elevated to the head man in charge for the Cowboys, Garrett served as their offensive coordinator from 2007 through 2010. During that span, Garrett led three top-seven total offenses, and two units which ranked within the top three of total offenses in the league.

Garrett may not bring a revolutionary offensive scheme to New York, but he is a guy who, once upon a time, was believed to be one of the brightest offensive minds in all of football. Expect a balanced offense that runs through Saquon Barkley, and is predicated on the play action.

Giants Offense is Littered With Talent

In New York, Garrett will inherit a young but uber-talented group of playmakers with the Giants. Saquon Barkley is one of the only running backs in football that Garrett could have moved on to from Ezekiel Elliott and not seen a dip in talent. At receiver, New York may lack a true number one option, however, Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard, and Darius Slayton all are, or have the ability to become, high-end wide receiver twos in this league. The Giants also have a chance of adding another receiver with the fourth-overall draft pick in this year’s upcoming draft. Let’s not forget Evan Engram, who when healthy is one of the league’s biggest mismatches.

Lastly, there is Daniel Jones, the key to the Giants’ future. Jones showed unbelievable promise during the latter part of his rookie season, tossing four-plus touchdowns in three of his final seven games.

New York will need to improve their offensive line if they have any hope of taking their offensive unit to the next level. However, with the talent that is currently in house, and the potential influx of talent that could be added prior to the start of the season, as long as Garrett’s offense is not Ben McAdoo-vanilla, the sky could be the limit.
