UFC 246 Main Card Results

Conor McGregor defeated Donald Cerrone by TKO at 0:40 of Round 1

McGregor threw and missed a huge punch to start the fight, but Cerrone ducked under it. That’s when McGregor clinched “Cowboy” and landed six hard shoulders to Cerrone’s face that appeared to bloody and break his nose. McGregor, 31, let go of the clinch and landed a kick to Cerrone’s head. He followed it with several hard left hands to the felled 36-year-old American, then pummelled him from the top until the stoppage. After the fight, McGregor revealed that he had just made history in the UFC.

Holly Holm defeated Raquel Pennington via unanimous decision.

Holm, 38, dominated the action against Pennington, 31, by using her long reach and better overall athleticism. If Pennington was looking for a brawl, she didn’t find one if the long-awaited rematch. Holm defeated Pennington in Holm’s UFC debut back in 2105 via split decision. But Holm proved she’s grown so much better since that fight. She was especially impressive in her uses of clinches. Pennington just couldn’t get out of them and didn’t do enough when boxing to score the win. Judges scored the bout 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 for Holm.

Aleksei Oleinik defeated Maurice Greene via submission at 4:38 of Round  2

It was a grappling fan’s dream between the veteran heavyweights on the card. Oleinik, 42, appeared to be on his way to choking Greene, 33, out in the first round, but Green’s toughness and smart moves got him through the stanza. It was back and forth action again in the second until Oleinik scored the armbar submission at 4:38 of round two.

Brian Kelleher defeated Ode Osbourne via submission at 2:49 of Round 1

Brian Kelleher defeated Ode Osbourne via submission in a bantamweight matchup. Osbourne landed a hard right hand at the beginning of the fight, but Kelleher found a way back to his feet soon after. Soon he was pushing Osbourne to the cage and then down, and  Kelleher locked in a tight guillotine to end the fight at 2:49 of the first round.

Carlos Diego Ferreira defeated Anthony Pettis via submission at 1:46 of Round 2

Ferreira won his sixth straight fight by defeating former UFC champion Pettis in the second round. It’s the biggest win of Ferreira’s career, one that should vault the fighter into the UFC’s official lightweight rankings. Pettis landed some blows on Ferreira, but in the end it was Ferreria’s constant pressure with grappling that scored him the victory via rear-naked choke at 1:46 of the round.

UFC 246 Prelims Results

Roxanne Modafferi defeated Maycee Barber by unanimous decision

In a huge upset, 37-year-old veteran women’s flyweight Modafferi defeated 21-year-old Barber via unanimous decision. Modafferi’s grappling was the difference. She took Barber down in all three rounds, and while it was a back-and-forth battle because of Barber’s youth and toughness, Modafferi always ended up getting the better of things. That was especially true after Barber appeared to injure her left knee at the beginning of the second. With Barber essentially a one-legged fighter for the last nine minutes of the fight, Modafferi poured on the grappling and ground and pound moves to score one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

Sodiq Yusuff defeated Andre Fili by unanimous decision.

Rising featherweight Yusuff, 26, controlled the action over the first two rounds against Fili, 29, then seemed to take his foot off the gas over the last five minutes. It didn’t hurt him though because judges saw the fight the same way as Yusuff. The first round was fought at a terrific pace, with both swinging for the knockout from the start. But Yusuff landed the harder blows. The second round saw Yusuff in top position for four minutes. It was a workmanlike approach to sapping an opponent’s strength. The last round was Fili’s volume punching against Yusuff trying to land the clean knockout punch that never came. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Yusuff.

Askar Askarov defeated Tim Elliot by split decision.

Rising 27-year-old flyweight prospect Askarov outworked resilient veteran Elliot over three rounds to score the important win. The action saw Askarov getting the better of things with sharp boxing moves and having more skill on the ground, too. In fact, Elliot was almost knocked out in the first round, but the 33-year-old former titleholder got through the tough moment and pushed the action for the rest of the fight. But even when Elliott managed to get top position on the mat, Askarov was always close to getting submissions and consistently landing harder punches and elbows. Judges scored the bout 29-28 and 30-27 twice for the No. 12-ranked Askarov will now move up the rankings after defeating No. 7-ranked Elliott.

Drew Dober defeated Nasrat Haqparast by TKO at 1:10 of Round 1

Dober stopped highly regarded lightweight prospect Haqparast by calmly weathering the 24-year-old storm of strikes and landing his own near-perfect counters in return. The 31-year-old veteran landed a straight left to put Haqparast on his back and finished him there with more hard lefts from above.

UFC 246 Early Prelims Results

Aleksa Camur defeated Justin Ledet by unanimous decision.

Camur won his UFC debut and only his sixth MMA fight ever against Ledet, a former college basketball player who has also competed as a professional boxer. Judges scored it wide for the busy Camur, though Ledet, 31, probably deserved more credit than he received from the judges for his sharp boxing. Still, the late takedown Camur scored tilted the optics of the fight in his favor, and the 24-year-old moves on to climbing higher rungs on the 205-pound ladder.

Sabina Mazo defeated JJ Aldrich by split decision.

Mazo, 22, from Columbia, defeated JJ Aldrich, 27, from Denver, via split decision. Judges scored it twice for Mazon 29-28 and once for Aldrich 29-28. Both women’s flyweights were bloodied by the end of the three rounds. Alrich’s boxing and movement helped her during the first half of the fight, but Mazo used the clinch to land hard knees up and down Alrick over the second half of the fight.

UFC 246: McGregor vs. Cerrone Prefight Prediction

McGregor, 31, hasn’t been in the Octagon since losing via fourth-round submission to UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. That’s a long time to be away from the sport, but McGregor is a known gym rat who always lives the life of a fighter no matter what else he has going on.

That will help him when he faces Cerrone, 36, a solid lightweight contender but not considered one of the top fighters in the division at this point in his career, though that might be just because 155 is so very deep.

Even though this fight is being contested at welterweight and Cerrone didn’t have to cut down in weight during fight camp, any benefit he received from it will also have been received by McGregor. That’s bad news for Cerrone, who isn’t quite on the same level.

Prediction: Cerrone tries to go toe-to-toe with McGregor and pays for it. McGregor via TKO in the first round. Cerrone is game, but McGregor’s left-hand counter is too stiff for the American to handle.
