Kyle Busch suffered a broken leg and a fractured foot in a viscous crash Saturday night during the Xfinity race at Daytona International Speedway.
He underwent surgery to repair the fracture on Saturday night. He will remain in the hospital for further observation.
The 10-car wreck involved Busch, Erik Jones, Chase Elliott, J.J. Yeley, Brendan Gaughan, Elliott Sadler, Brian Scott, Darrell Wallace Jr., Jeffrey Earnhardt and Cale Conley.
The race was red flagged as the track was cleaned. When it resumed, Ryan Reed went on to get his first career series win.
Here’s what we know so far:
1. Busch Smashed Into an Inside Wall Head-On
The wreck happened when Erik Jones in the No. 20 Toyota turned toward the infield, then back up the track and into oncoming traffic.
Busch was right behind Jones and his No. 54 Toyota veered off the track at full speed and into an inside wall head-on.
2. He Climbed Out of The Car on His Own
The crash looked frightening, but Busch was able to climb out of his car by himself before laying down on the grass.
The wall did not have a SAFER barrier, the steel-and-foam energy-reduction protection.
Kevin Harvick hit a concrete wall last year at Daytona and they were criticized for not having enough of the barrier.
Speedway President Joie Chitwood said after Busch’s crash:
The Daytona international Speedway did not live up to its responsibility today. We should have had SAFER barrier there. We did not. We are going to fix that right now.
3. Busch Broke His Right Leg & Left Foot
Busch suffered a compound break of his right leg and a fracture of his left foot in the crash.
Ambulances were quick to arrive on the scene and they loaded Busch onto a stretcher.
He was complaining of right leg pain was taken to a local hospital for further observation.
4. He Will Not Race in Sunday’s Daytona 500
Busch will not race in Sunday’s Daytona 500. He was set to begin on the outside of Row 2, the 4th overall position, after an impressive run at Thursday’s Budweiser Duels. He finished 2nd in Duel 2
Matt Crafton will fill in as a replacement driver.
5. Kyle’s Older Brother Kurt Has Been Suspended Indefinitely
Just Friday, Busch’s other brother, Kurt Busch, was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR for domestic abuse.
Kurt is also not racing in Sunday’s Daytona 500. Stewart-Haas Racing replaced him with Regan Smith.
