Tori Spelling, ‘True Tori’: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Let’s start at the very beginning. We fell in love with Tori Spelling as virgin Donna Martin on her father Aaron Spelling’s TV show Beverly Hills 90210 in the 90s, though she’d appeared in other projects including Troop Beverly Hills and Saved By The Bell. Over the years, we’ve watched Spelling on television as she appeared on a host of reality shows with her family. We’ve followed Spelling’s ups and downs with her mother in the public eye, her heartbreak over the death of her father, her divorce from her first husband, her devastation in the wake of her husband Dean McDermott’s cheating scandal, the birth of each of her kids, and her many business ventures. Read on for the 5 Fast Facts on Tori, her reality show, her financial issues, her family, and her recent Ebola scare.

1. Spelling’s Net Worth Is an Estimated $1.5 Million

When Spelling’s father died, she was not left with millions from his estate as she reportedly inherited $800,000 from her dad’s massive fortune. Fortunately, Spelling had her own millions from her acting career. This past year, Spelling has come out to the public about her over-spending and bad investments via her book Spelling It Like It Is, saying that she’s been having great financial difficulties after blowing through her millions. Spelling stated:

After selling our Encino house at a loss, we were hoping to make a bit of the money back on Malibu. You heard of those people who flip houses to make money? We were the opposite: flippers who lost major sums of money on every transaction. My restlessness would be our financial ruin. My real estate compulsion had put us in serious debt. I’d worked so hard and earned so much, but I had nothing to show for it.

She continued:

Once I was Googling myself to find an article I’d heard was published. I typed ‘tori spelling’ into the search field and a bunch of options came up. One of them was “tori spelling net worth.” Curious, I clicked on it. Google thought I was worth fifteen million dollars. Fifteen million dollars! I didn’t have one million. We had some income here and there, but no savings apart from our retirement accounts.

Though her mother Candy has helped out her daughter a little over the years, the two have not always had the best relationship. Candy inherited a fortune of $600 million from her husband. On this season of True Tori, we see Spelling break down crying over her financial problems and fears about supporting her family.

Currently, Spelling’s net worth is reported to be an estimated $1.5 million. Spelling and McDermott do not have a prenup.

2. Dean McDermott’s Relationship With Wife Spelling Began With Cheating

When McDermott and Spelling first got together, they were each married to other people. The two met while filming the Lifetime TV movie Mind Over Murder while McDermott was married to Mary Jo Eustace and Spelling was married to Charlie Shanian. Spelling and Shanian were only married about two years prior to divorcing. Shanian was an actor and playwright who married Spelling in a $1 million wedding. Eustace was a Canadian actress and sous-chef who had a son named Jack with McDermott. The two were also in the process of adopting a girl named Lola when their 13-year marriage fell apart, so McDermott felt they shouldn’t go through with the adoption. Eustace carried on with the adoption as a single parent to Lola.

McDermott and Spelling married on a beach in Fiji on May 7, 2006 and they currently have four children together – sons Liam Aaron (born March 13, 2007) and Finn Davey (born August 30, 2012) [9] and daughters Stella Doreen (born June 9, 2008)[10] and Hattie Margaret (born October 10, 2011).

3. Mom Candy Spelling and Daughter Tori Have Had Very Public Feuds Over the Years

Tori Spelling and her mother Candy have had a publicly difficult relationship over the years. There were times when Spelling’s mother wouldn’t see Tori or her grandchildren because of their strained relationship and Candy opens up about their issues in her book Candy At Last. E! News reported:

Candy reveals she’ll go long periods of time without hearing from Tori. “During the year we were estranged, it was excruciating not hearing from Tori and not being able to get ahold of her,” she writes, adding that the first time she met Dean McDermott was at the funeral of her late husband Aaron Spelling. “It was very uncomfortable,” Candy recounts.

Candy explained in her book:

Tori and I are a work in progress and probably always will be. I notice that the more my self-esteem expands, the less patience I have for the pursuit cycle she creates when she shuts me out. We have a pattern, and until we can break it hand-in-hand, this is going to be the little dance she and I do together.

We witnessed some of Tori and Candy’s ups and downs on Tori’s many reality shows as well as when Candy wrote an open letter to the public, addressed to her daughter. As for what Candy thinks of her daughter’s show True Tori, Candy states:

As a mom, you don’t wanna see your children hurt in any way, and I have to say that it’s painful for me to watch it.

Nonetheless, Candy Spelling posted today on Facebook this kind message about her daughter’s struggles:

It’s incredibly brave to share your life with the public, especially during hard times. My daughter has shown real strength and complete devotion to her beautiful family in the Lifetime Television docu-series True Tori.

4. Spelling Recently Was Hospitalized With an Ebola Scare

Recently, Spelling was in the media for possibly having the Ebola virus. Of course, this was not the case. It turned out she needed to be hospitalized for severe bronchitis and pneumonia. Us Weekly reported:

Over the weekend, the True Tori star started coughing so intensely that she nearly passed out and had to be hospitalized. She was eventually admitted for severe bronchitis and possible pneumonia … TMZ first reported that the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum was being quarantined like an Ebola patient, and upon arrival at the hospital, was initially kept from other patients while the medical staff took precautions treating her.

This isn’t Spelling’s first severe illness, which required hospitalization. When Spelling was going through dealing with her husband’s affair, she ended up so sick that she needed to be taken to the hospital. She also had an extremely rough time with her last pregnancy and almost died.

5. She’s Still Dealing With Her Husband’s Affair

In December 2013, it was made public that Spelling’s husband McDermott had a two-day affair with a 28-year-old woman named Emily Goodhand while he was working in Canada. He reportedly told Goodhand that he was in a sexless marriage, though Spelling says they had very kinky sex just before McDermott’s trip. Last season on True Tori, we followed Spelling and McDermott through the aftermath of McDermott’s cheating scandal, leaving Spelling at home with four kids while McDermott stayed in rehab. McDermott was evidently in rehab for sex addiction and substance abuse. We watched Spelling crumble and lash out at her husband as her heart continued to break over her husband’s betrayal.

This season, Spelling continues to struggle with McDermott’s affair and finally looks at a photo of the women McDermott had an affair with. With the support of her friends, Spelling tries to maintain her relationship with her husband, though it’s clearly difficult. Spelling even meets with McDermott’s ex-wife Eustace, telling her it’s okay to say, “I told you so.” Eustace says that it’s not karma and that if it wasn’t Tori, it would have been someone else. Eustace also hints that McDermott may have had an agenda when he got together with “Aaron Spelling’s daughter.” Whatever the case, it’s sad to see Tori Spelling going through such struggles and issues as she’s been a fan-favorite for years.
