After years of making movies, Woody Allen is finally dipping his toes into the world of television. The legendary filmmaker is working on a series for Amazon.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Allen Doesn’t Know What It’s Going to Be About
According to statement from Allen, he “has no ideas” about what the project is going to be about, just that he’s doing it. The full statement read:
Amazon Studios today announced it has signed the critically-acclaimed Director Woody Allen to write and direct his first television series ever. Untitled Woody Allen Project, a half-hour series, has received a full season order and episodes will be written and directed by Allen. Customers will be able to see the series exclusively on Prime Instant Video in the US, UK and Germany. Additional details, including casting information, will be made available in the future.
“Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series,” said Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios. “From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”
Woody Allen added, “I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”
Allen is represented by ICM Partners.
2. Allen Has a New Emma Stone Movie Coming Out This Year
The comedian has previously been outspoken on his views on TV, famously saying in the move Annie Hall:
In California, they don’t throw their garbage away – they make it into TV shows.
On the movie front, Allen has one movie in the works for 2015, his IMDb page refers to it as “Untitled Woody Allen Project.” The movie stars Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix. The plot of the movie apparently goes like this:
On a small town college campus, a philosophy professor in existential crisis gives his life new purpose when he enters into a relationship with his student.
This is Stone’s second project in 12 months with Allen after 2014’s Magic in the Moonlight with Colin Firth.
3. The Show Will Debut in 2016
Little information is available about the Allen TV show. All that’s known is that he’s writing and directing, as usual. No word on whether Allen will also star in the movie. According to the statement, the show will debut sometime in 2016.
4. Amazon TV Comes With Amazon Prime
The show will air on Amazon’s TV streaming service which is available with a $99 subscription to Amazon Prime.
5. This Win for Amazon Came Just After the Company Scooped its First Golden Globe
This is another major coup for streaming sites such as Amazon, Hulu and Netflix. The announcement came just two days after Amazon won its first Golden Globe for the show Transparent.
