April’s new movies on DVD included The Voices, Batman vs. Robin, Taken 3 and The Gambler, and there are some great upcoming DVD releases coming in May 2015 as well. May’s DVD release calendar is absolutely stacked with some must-see new movies, and whether you’re looking for great dramas or funny movies to watch, next month’s new releases are sure to please.
So without further ado, here are the top 5 best new movies coming to DVD and Blu-Ray in May 2015:
1. Selma
Rated: PG-13
Release Date: May 5, 2015
Starring: David Oyelowo, Tim Roth, Carmen Ejogo
IMDB Rating: 7.6/10
Selma certainly deserves the critical acclaim it is receiving. It’s not the type of movie that does well at the box offices — it only pulled in $52.1M — sure, but it’s a must see movie fueled by a gripping performance by David Oyelowo. It revolves around the life and death of Martin Luther King Jr. as it chronicles the three-month period in 1965 in which Martin Luther King Jr. led a campaign to secure equal voting rights for all.

2. Fifty Shades of Grey
Rated: R
Release Date: May 8, 2015
Starring: Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, Jennifer Ehle
IMDB Rating: 4.2/10
Although I’m told it doesn’t live up to its counterpart novels, the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is still worth a DVD pick-up. It isn’t exactly highly-rated, but you know you still want to see what all the fuss is about. So, instead of spending $30 for you and your loved one to see it in theaters, you waited for the DVD release, and it looks like that was a smart move. The Fifty Shades of Grey movie is sort of like a trainwreck: you have to stop and look, but you hope no one actually got hurt during it.

3. Still Alice
Rated: PG-13
Release Date: May 12, 2015
Starring: Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth, Alec Baldwin
IMDB Rating: 7.5/10
Still Alice is another one of those movies that isn’t a great theater watch, but it is perfect for a night at home. It didn’t fare well at the box office, but it is a great film and is highly-rated on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Julianne Moore’s performance is at its best, and even Kristen Stewart’s role is watchable. The story focuses on a linguistics professor who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and the effect on her life and family relationships.

American Sniper revolves around the story of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle’s return home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty and the troubles he faces. American Sniper a controversial film that did quite impressive numbers in theaters, bringing in nearly $350M. Controversy aside, it is one of Bradley Cooper’s best acting performances to date.

5. Hot Tub Time Machine 2
Rated: R
Release Date: May 19, 2015
Starring: Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke
IMDB Rating: 5.2/10
I’m one of those people that believes it’s more than okay to watch dumb movies once in awhile, and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is certainly a dumb movie. So if you’re feeling like catching some dumb laughs from an immature movie, you’re definitely going to want to check it out. It has the same comedic style as the first film in the series, which I happened to personally love. It’s no Back to the Future, but it makes a great movie to watch with your friends for a good laugh.
