The 2015 ESPYs are practically the Caitlyn Jenner Awards with all the media attention surrounding her attending the show. Read on for the details on what to expect from Jenner, her courage award, her upcoming reality show, and the support from her family.
1. She’s Been Honored With The Arthur Ashe Courage Award
Caitlyn Jenner is the 2015 recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. The ESPYs co-executive producer Maura Mandt talked to Sports Illustrated about the reasoning behind choosing Jenner for the honor and stated:
I think Caitlyn’s decision to publicly come out as a transgender woman and live as Caitlyn Jenner displayed enormous courage and self-acceptance. Bruce Jenner could have easily gone off into the sunset as this American hero and never have dealt with this publicly. Doing so took enormous courage. He was one of the greatest athletes of our time. That is what the Arthur Ashe Courage Award is about, somebody from the athletic community who has done something that transcends sport.
When Jenner first heard about the award, her response was that it was “truly special” and that:
For the first time this July, I will be able to stand as my true self in front of my peers.
2. Abby Wambach Is Presenting Jenner With His Courage Award At The ESPYs
Famous soccer player Abby Wambach is the presenter for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYs, giving the award to Caitlyn Jenner. Wambach is an Olympic gold medalist, star athlete, and lesbian in the public eye. When she helped her team win the World Cup recently, she kissed her wife to celebrate and the video went viral.
3. Jenner’s Kardashian Brood Will Be Supporting Her At The ESPY Awards
Caitlyn Jenner has been showered with support from his family, especially all his children and step-children. Those who will be at the ESPYs to support him are reported to be Brody Jenner, Casey Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, and Khloe Kardashian. Brandon Jenner’s attendance is up in the air because his wife is due with their first child together. Rob Kardashian probably won’t attend because he’s avoided the paparazzi, appearances and big events for the past year.
Jenner’s mother and sister will also be in attendance.
4. Host Joel McHale Has Joked That He’s Jenner’s Spokesperson
Joel McHale has joked that the ESPY Awards are basically “The Caitlyn Jenner Show.” McHale told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s been asked so many questions about Jenner’s award at the ESPYs he pretty much feels like her spokesperson. Jenner quipped:
I think I need to be paid as Caitlyn Jenner’s spokesperson. It’s the first question I get asked on everything. I really don’t mind answering questions about Caitlyn or anything. I will say it again: It’s insanely courageous and nobody can deny what Bruce Jenner did in the ’70s.
5. Her Reality Show Premieres In Less Than Two Weeks
I Am Cait is Caitlyn Jenner’s reality show, which is set to debut on E!, July 26, 2015. It’s a documentary TV show following Jenner’s transgender transformation and showing how life is for her, along with how her transformation affects her loved ones.
