Although ABC is typically the home of Disney programming, characters from the DreamWorks Animation studios’ Shrek franchise will be on the network again this holiday season. That’s because Shrek The Halls airs twice in December. The popular 2007 holiday special will make its 2016 debut on Thursday, December 8. Read on for a preview of the special and to find out when it starts.
Shrek The Halls first aired on ABC in November 2007 and has become an annual tradition for the network. This year, it is paired with Toy Story That Time Forgot.
The 21-minute special is set between Shrek The Third and Shrek Forever After and starts with Shrek and Fiona trying to have a traditional Christmas with his family. However, Donkey arrives and ruins Shrek’s plans. Donkey, Giny, Puss in Boots and Shrek all get to tell special Christmas stories.
Shrek The Halls is the first of two Shrek specials from DreamWorks. In 2010, NBC debuted Scared Shrekless for Halloween. Although DreamWorks wasn’t initially planning on making a fifth Shrek film, there is now one in the works after NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks. It’s supposed to be out in 2019 or 2020.
