After a full week to get over William’s death in “Memphis,” NBC’s This Is Us is back to have us in tears again. “What Now?,” the next-to-last episode of the show’s first season, airs on Tuesday, March 7 at 9 p.m. ET. Read on for a preview and more photos from the new episode.
Since “Memphis” focused on Randall and William’s relationship, “What Now?” is really the first episode in two weeks to deal with the rest of the Pearson family. We last heard from Kate and Kevin in “Jack Pearson’s Son,” an equally emotional episode that saw Kevin squander the opening night of his show so he could help Randall in his time of need. Randall suffered a nervous breakdown, and Kevin did what his father would have done – help.

Kate’s relationship with Toby took a surprising turn. The two agreed to share more of their secrets with each other, but Kate couldn’t bring herself to talk about Jack’s death. In the end, Toby decided that the two of them needed to take a break until Kate could be more open. We still do not know how Jack died in the past.

In “What Now?,” Randall will try to say goodbye to William with a unique memorial service.
“William left clear instructions that he wanted his memorial to be something that was fun and celebratory rather than downtrodden and sad, and he ensured that that would be the case by leaving it in the hands of the two granddaughters,” Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall, told Entertainment Weekly.
The actor told the magazine that Beth is particularly struggling “because she never had a real opportunity to say goodbye. The whole Pearson family — at least Randall’s section of the Pearson family — is trying to figure out how best to move forward with the loss of a family member.”
After “What Now?,” all that’s left is the season one finale, which airs on March 14.
