“Whitney: Can I Be Me” Documentary: What Time & Channel Is It On?

Tonight is the premiere of Whitney: Can I Be Me on Showtime.

The documentary explores Whitney Houston’s rise to fame, and her relationship with Bobby Brown. In its review, the Daily News writes, “The best thing about ‘Whitney: Can I Be Me’ is that it does remind us just how great Houston was. It relies on footage from a 1999 European tour by the singer, including some behind-the-scene moments. One shows Houston rehearsing in a room with her backup singers, capturing just how powerful and magnetic her voice was.”

The doc, which was originally released on August 18, has received relatively positive reviews from critics. The New York Times calls it “dutifully respectful” while Variety says it allows audiences to really know Whitney– “to feel her pain and grace and dizzying spiritual rifts, in a way we haven’t before.”

Whitney: Can I Be Me also examines the intersection of race and celebrity, highlighting an incident in which Houston was booed at the Soul Train Awards for “having sold out”. That event is then related back to her upbringing in Newark, New Jersey.

In her inner circle, Houston was known to have often asked the question: “Can I be me?” This documentary examines whether Houston really could be herself as an artist while also maintaining the image of the flawless R&B pop queen that was expected of her.
