‘Mr. Robot’ Season 3 Episode 6 Timeline: Why Was Obama Mentioned and Not Trump?

Mr. Robot Season 3 Episode 6

USA Mr. Robot Season 3 Episode 6

This week’s Season 3 Episode 6 of Mr. Robot was pretty amazing, but there was one part at the end that left fans a little confused about the timeline. There was a moment when Obama was mentioned, and some fans are wondering why it was Obama and not Trump. This post has spoilers for Season 3 Episode 6.

At the very end of the episode, while Elliot was watching the news report on TV, a reporter could be heard saying that President Obama was going to give a press conference later about the attacks. Some fans are a little confused by this because there have been so many references to Donald Trump in the previous episodes. How can Obama be President and giving a news conference? Did the timeline change?

No, the timeline did not change. The series is just farther back in time than you might think. The big E-Corp hack was in May 2015. And it hasn’t been that long since it happened. In fact, today’s episode took place in late September 2015. At this point in time, Donald Trump is just beginning his run for presidency. So those news clips you saw of Trump, when Whiterose was talking about putting in money to support him, were in reference to his campaign. He has not been elected President yet in the story’s timeline. Barack Obama is still President, and Whiterose is just backing Trump in the campaign.

You might be confused because in the Season 3 premiere, during Elliot’s monologue, there were references to Trump being President and to the Wall that he’s building in Mexico. But actually, within the show’s timeline, those were just hypothetical scenarios that Eliot was imagining. Elliot’s monologue was giving us a view of what Elliot’s actions could lead to in this show’s universe. Sam Esmail is vocally anti-Trump, so he inserted his own political views, showing that Elliot was imagining a worst-case scenario from his actions that would result in Trump being President.

So the mention of President Obama at the end of the episode wasn’t a mistake. And it wasn’t an indication that the timeline in the show had been changed at all. It actually fits in perfectly within the show’s timeline. Obama is still President and Trump is currently campaigning for President and being backed by Whiterose.
