The Jonas Brothers reunited on the 2019 Billboard Music Awards stage, performing together after almost a decade apart. They performed their hit single “Sucker,” while also paying homage to the music they made individually during their time apart.
A full video will be shared below once it becomes available.
After Kelly Clarkson announced the group’s return after a six-year hiatus and instructed the audience to get on their feet to welcome the Jonas Brothers to the stage, the music began and instead of going right into “Sucker,” as expected, Nick Jonas started on his own singing his single “Jealous.” After the first verse, his brother Joe joined him and they sang the song together.
Then, the mashup transitioned into “Cake By the Ocean,” one of the hit songs from Joe’s pop group DNCE. The crowd went wild again, and they engaged with the audience during that portion of the performance; fans of BTS excitedly pointed out on Twitter that Joe Jonas had a brief exchange with the group.
Finally, as a trio, they began singing “Sucker,” and it was so clear on stage that the time apart did not negatively impact their ability to perform live together. In fact, their stage presence seems to have evolved and emerged with time making them back and better than ever, which bodes well for their upcoming tour.
Earlier today, ahead of their Billboard Music Awards performance, the Jonas Brothers announced their 2019 tour dates. According to Billboard, the North America tour, named “Happiness Begins Tour,” has 40 dates and will start in Miami on August 7. For complete tour dates and how to purchase tickets, click here.
During the performance, Nick stopped in the audience to kiss his wife, actress Priyanka Chopra, who he married in December 2018. Chopra, along with Kevin’s wife Danielle and Joe’s fianceé Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, is featured in the “Sucker” music video. The women, who affectionately refer to themselves as the “J-Sisters” or “Jonas Sisters,” were in attendance at the BBMAs in support of their men. An audience shot during the performance showed the women dancing and singing along to the music, side by side.
Fans of the Jonas Brothers went wild on Twitter during and after the performance, reflecting on how good it felt to see them happy and performing together once again.
When Billboard announced last month that the Jonas Brothers would be performing at the 2019 BBMAs “the band’s first televised awards show performance in more than a decade,” they did not tell fans that the set would include music from the brothers’ individual endeavors, just that they would be performing their Number 1 hit “Sucker.”
While the Jonas Brothers were not nominated in any Billboard Music Award categories this year (“Sucker” was released on March 1), if the rest of their album is received the way their new singles have been, it would be unsurprising if the newly-reunited group sees some award season nods next year. Happiness Begins, their new studio album, will be released on June 7 of this year.
