Black Swan on ‘The Masked Singer’: Clues Pointing to JoJo Levesque

The Black Swan

Fox The Black Swan on "The Masked Singer."

The Black Swan is a fan-favorite singer on this season of “The Masked Singer,” and a number of fans are determined that the celebrity hiding under the mask is JoJo Levesque.

With just five contestants remaining, it’s anyone’s guess who will take home the crown this go around, but if one thing is for sure, it’s that JoJo fans will be frustrated if the trophy goes to anyone but her.

Not only do many fans think the Black Swan sounds like a vocal replica of JoJo, but there are a number of clues that point to the singer and actress being under the costume. Other guesses for the swan are Demi Lovato and Ashley Simpson, but people aren’t so sure those guesses fit.

Clues That Point to JoJo

In the first clues video, the Black Swan stated that she was “incredibly rare.” She said that her “talent” made her the “prey” of someone else. As she said this, a WANTED poster flashed in the background. She said she was “hypnotized by a Hollywood deal I couldn’t resist, one that would make my dreams come true” and thought she would “never see the light again” but was rescued by her “faithful flock.”

The flash of a chess piece was enough to convince Ken Jeong that the person belting it out under the mask is “The Queen’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy, while others mused it could be singer Camila Cabello.

So what clues suggest the Black Swan is JoJo?

JoJo was just 13 when she topped the charts, and she’s had a roller-coaster of a career since, including a years-long legal battle with her record label. That could relate to the “Hollywood deal” mentioned in the clues video. When she released her first album in 10 years at age 25 in 2016, JoJo told Rolling Stone, “I’m really grateful to be able to move on with my life and career.” She has released two albums, “Good to Know” and “December Baby,” since then, both in 2020.

The Black Swan’s fifth clues video showed her rejecting a backpack — perhaps a parachute — with a “Montana” badge on it before diving out of an airplane. Devoted fans know JoJo told Extra in 2008 that she was offered the role of “Hannah Montana” on Disney but turned it down.

Another telling clue is the “monster” that has been referenced in her clues package. As “The Masked Singer” fans may recall, rapper T-Pain was the Monster — and the winner — in the show’s first season, and JoJo performed her version of the singer’s hit song “Can’t Believe It” in 2008.

Furthermore, the episode 10 clues video included a print of the state of New Hampshire, where JoJo grew up in part, according to a 2002 interview with reporter Robert Gillis. She even has the state’s motto, “Live Free or Die,” tattooed on the back of her neck.

What Do Fans Think?

One look at Talent Recap’s YouTube comments section — which has proved to be notoriously accurate across all seasons of “The Masked Singer” — reveals that most fans believe JoJo is the singer under the Black Swan mask.

The most “liked” comment on the video reads, “We all know its jojo, they know its jojo, God knows its jojo. It’s jojo.”

Another comment reads, “They either don’t know who Jojo is or they are guessing incorrectly on purpose for dramatic effect when she’s revealed. Her voice is too distinct to think it’s anyone but Jojo if you know her.”

For now, fans will have to wait and see whether or not the Black Swan truly is JoJo, and whether she has what it takes to win “The Masked Singer.”

“The Masked Singer” airs Wednesdays on FOX at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific times.
