Hulu just released the trailer for Patton Oswalt’s upcoming Marvel show and it features a few surprises. “M.O.D.O.K.” is an adult stop motion animation show produced by Marvel Studios featuring a comedic take on one of Marvel’s more outlandish supervillains.
As the character explains in the trailer, he’s a Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing but even if it is not by design, the eponymous flying, oversized head is pretty hilarious. In the trailer he’s struggling to run his supervillain operation and maintain his family at the same time. One gets the feeling that M.O.D.O.K isn’t doing so well, as we see him warning his children that his may be “one of the many divorces that is the kids fault.” The character, like his comic book counterpart, is a member of Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) – the villainous group with iconic beekeeper-like costumes which were teased in Wandavision.
Marvel fans will get a big kick out of a few surprise cameos including Iron Man, Wonderman, and the notorious dragon of the Marvel Universe, Fin Fang Foom – who we see M.O.D.O.K. riding. John Hamm of “Madman” fame will be tackling the role of Tony Stark while Nathan Fillion, best known as Mal from “Firefly,” will be voicing Simon Williams, aka Wonderman. For folks unfamiliar with the latter, the super-strong Avenger hasn’t made it into the MCU yet but in the comics the character provides the brain patterns necessary to make Vision. In “M.O.D.O.K.” he’s apparently sleeping with M.O.D.O.K.’s wife.
As for Fin Fang Foom, he’s a big dragon from space. The huge alien predates most of the mainstream superheroes of the Marvel Universe but has kept up occasional appearances in Marvel continuity. A recent Funko design featuring the character led to speculation that Fin Fang Foom might be making an appearance in the upcoming “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” but it is possible that toy may have been inspired by M.O.D.O.K.
Eagle-eyed Marvel fans will spot another cameo. Super-Adaptoid makes an appearance singing along to Third Eye Blind. The A.I.M. android is voiced by comedian Jon Daly.
We’re likely to see more fun obscure Marvel references in the show. Whoopie Goldberg is slated to appear as Poundcakes. That character is a female wrestler created by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio and John Byrne in the late 70s.
Patton Oswalt is writing, producing, and starring in the upcoming series. M.O.D.O.K. will also star Ben Schwartz (“Parks and Recreation”), Melissa Fumero (“Brooklyn Nine-nine”) and Aimee Garcia (“Lucifer”), all of whom appeared last year at the New York Comicon to debut footage of the show. “I wouldn’t even say he’s D-level,” Oswalt said of the character. “He’s J or K or whatever level.” You can watch the footage from the event below, including producer Jordan Blum discussing the innovative hand-held stop-motion techniques that the show creators invented specifically for M.O.D.O.K. Blum’s footage starts at the 6:45 mark.
M.O.D.O.K will debut on May 21st on Hulu. All ten episodes of the show will be available to stream.
