‘The Masked Dancer’ Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
The Group A contestants performing in the playoff episode were the Exotic Bird, Hammerhead Shark, Cricket, and Tulip.
After introducing the episode’s guest judge, Rob Lowe, it was time for the show to begin.
Exotic Bird was the first performer to take the stage, dancing to “Latch” by Disclosure featuring Sam Smith. The judges agreed that the celebrity behind the mask is likely a performer, guessing it might be Jordin Sparks, Janet Jackson, Kate Hudson, or Megan Thee Stallion.
Cricket was next to perform, dancing a 90s-inspired routine to “This Is How We Do It” by Montrell Jordan. He said he picked a 90s routine because that’s when he got his start. The judges guessed he might be Brian McKnight, Ryan Reynolds, Michael Phelps, or Ryan Lochte.
Hammerhead danced to “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, the panelists wondered if it might be Ryan Seacrest, Joe Rogan, or Jersey Shore‘s Mike the Situation.
Last to perform for the Group A playoffs was the Tulip, who danced an impressive partner dance routine to “Field of Gold.” The panelists agreed that she is a trained dancer, and zeroed in on the fact that she has a small frame and seems young. The guessed she might be Sarah Hyland, Hayden Panettiere, Kristen Bell, Charli D’Amelio, or Simone Biles.
At the end of the episode, the Cricket received the least number of votes, which meant it was time for him to be sent home. But first, he had to take off his mask to unveil his celebrity identity.
The Cricket Was Unmasked, Revealing Himself As…
… R&B singer Brian McKnight!
For their final guesses, Ashley Tisdale guessed Ashton Kutcher, Ken Jeong guessed Michael Phelps, Brian Austin Green and Rob Lowe guessed Ryan Lochte, and Paula Abdul guessed Brian McKnight. Abdul was the only panelist to guess correctly!
McKnight said he chose to do The Masked Dancer instead of The Masked Singer because his singing voice would be too recognizable. He said, “It was fun because nobody knew it was me except for Paula.” Of his time competing, he added, “Being anonymous was great, because I don’t dance.”
McKnight was on the soundtrack of 90210 and appeared on the show.
Before the Cricket took off his mask, the panelists each got to ask him a final clue. They learned:
– he has been famous for a long time
– he has won an award for his craft
– he is not known for a multitude of things
– he has “baby crickets”
New episodes of The Masked Dancer air on Wednesday nights at 8/7c on FOX.
