There is something about Christmas that seems to lend itself to a guy wearing a bow tie when he’s hitting the parties. No matter how hip or trendy or fashionable bow ties are now, they’ll forever be associated with just sort of being something different and/or special. We used to wear a bow tie to work, back in the day, so we’re fans. But we always stood out, and that may or may not be a fantastic thing. Enough, though, about our personal psyche, etc.
Self-Tie vs. Pre-Tied
As for this list, it’s separated in two: Christmas bow ties that are self-tie and Christmas bow ties that are pre-tied. Just to be clear, a “self-tie” bow tie is a tie that you have to tie yourself. A “pre-tied” bow tie is already tied for you. As for the pre-tied bow ties in the list, none of them are “clip on” ties: they all have an adjustable strap that goes under your collar and around your neck. We are not making judgements here, but we will tell you that when people find out you’ve tied your own bow tie, they tend to treat you as if you’ve discovered planets…or cured diseases…or written the Great American Novel. (Let ‘em think those things.) But we have also worn pre-tied bow ties and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with them. But never you mind. It’s the holidays. A terrific, classic Christmas bow tie that is not pre-tied: you have to tie it yourself. Predominantly red, it features various sized green diagonal striping, along with white snowflakes, green holly with red detailing, abstract ornament graphics (that seem to connote Santa) and subdued snowflakes within the weave of the tie. It includes a handkerchief that you’ll want to fold in one of the many possible ways a pocket square can be folded. Comes in a nice box so it would make a great gift, too. Hisdern makes several different Christmas bow ties — all great — but we particularly like the black with green Christmas trees because it’s a deep color and it can be tough to find a black Christmas tie.
Very festive Christmas bow tie that is a self-tie: you have to tie it yourself. Extras So Sweet calls their fabric “100 percent premium holiday cotton.” The imagery includes an ornament, a gift, a tree, a star and abstract graphic elements. They make another Christmas bow tie — also red — with snowflake and starburst imagery and another in red with snowflake and snowman imagery.
This is a self-tie and it’s unique in that it’s a gray color that actually swings closer to silver. The imagery is the traditional snowman with the stovetop hat, red scarf, stick hands and a carrot nose. (Yes, it’s a white carrot, but they make those now in the grocery store.) Note that the tie only goes as large as an 18 inch neck (it’s adjustable, starting at just about 14 inches). This is a 100 percent silk Christmas bow tie that is a self-tie. The fabric is red with tiny white dots and a smattering of green Christmas trees. Because it’s silk and a self-tie, it leans a bit more toward the sophisticated side. Will work great for the Christmas outfit but it isn’t loud. Somewhat subtle.

This is a beautiful self-tie Christmas bow tie. The fabric is “premium holiday cotton” according to the maker. The snowflake motif is almost abstract because there are so many layers of varying sized snowflakes depicted. You could probably pull this off in a non-Christmas setting, but it will definitely work during the holidays.
This very green tie is pre-tied and has an adjustable strap that fits up to a 19 inch neck. It’s microfiber polyester and it features lighter green Christmas trees on the darker green background, which has horizontal lines running through the weave. Retreez makes an alternate version of this Christmas bow tie, with the background in red. The tie doesn’t have a ton of reviews, but just about all of them are exceedingly positive.
This 100 percent polyester satin tie is pre-tied and has an adjustable band. It’s black with traditionally colored candy canes and white snowflakes (of various sizes). This is another Christmas bow tie that gets very positive reviews. Izzy & Roo also offer a similar Christmas bow tie that features a Santa motif on a black background. Because it’s black, it would be great at a formal holiday gathering.
We include this tie in the list for a couple of main reasons: it’s super inexpensive and we can almost guarantee you’ll be the only person at the Christmas party who is wearing a baby blue colored Christmas bow tie with white reindeer and stars. This is a pre-tied tie with an adjustable strap. Did we also mention it is baby blue? If you can pull this off, we think you must have magical Christmas powers.
For the golfer who wants to snaz it up with a Christmas bow tie. This is a pre-tied bow tie with the adjustable strap that goes up to 19 inches. The imagery — on a very lovely deep blue background — is of Santa completing his swing and a snowman holding the pin. (Maybe the snowman caddies for Santa?) Another great one from Tagerwilen is the lightish blue textured Christmas bow tie with red scarf-wearing reindeer. It’s a very nice blue. It is not baby blue.
A very fun pre-tied Christmas bow tie. It’s 100 percent premium cotton and it’s crafted in the U.S. The strap is adjustable from 12 to 21 inches. We could be mistaken, but the Santa on this tie looks almost exactly like the Santa in the legendary, classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” t.v. special. If you prefer Santa on a self-tie bow tie, this version could be the one for you.
