Your space ship in No Man’s Sky is very much the only real friend you will make during your expeditions. It’s the only way to get from planet to planet and is ultimately the most important tool in your entire arsenal. However, you will eventually need to acquire new ships so you can fend off space pirates and survive the harsh conditions of various planets. Thankfully, upgrading you ship is not difficult in No Man’s Sky, but if you want to get a new one entirely it will cost you some serious credits.
If you’re content with the ship you have, there are several ways you can go about upgrading it. The most common is finding crashed debris or pods scattered across various planets. All you will need to do is approach the wreckage and hold down the interact button. You will then receive an upgrade to your ship, which you can install if you have enough of the corresponding elements. These upgrades can range from better weapons to stronger shields that can help you survive the harshness of various planets.
The other way to acquire upgrades for your ship is by interacting with the various NPC aliens scattered about the universe. While some may give you upgrades to your Multi-Tool, others can gift you with power-ups to your starships. Normally, you will have to either complete a quest or gift an alien with a certain mineral to be rewarded with an upgrade. Make sure to save before you interact with an alien, that way if you pick the wrong answer you can always reload.
Now when it comes to buying a new ship, this is a far easier task than locating upgrades. Any time you enter a space station you will see a hanger full of other ships entering and leaving. Approach one and you should be given a prompt to interact with another alien. Once you do this, the alien will appear on-screen and offer you the space ship for sale at a hefty price. It’s important to note that any new ship you buy will always be better than the one you currently own, that way you are always upgrading.
Just make sure that you are willing to spend a large amount of money if you plan to buy a new ship since they can cost millions of credits. However, upgrading your ship should always be at the back of your mind since space pirates are a tangible threat the closer you get to the center of the universe. The last thing you want is to be robbed of all your hard earned credits by a bunch of marauders in the middle of an asteroid belt.
