After being teased during yesterday’s EA E3 press conference, BioWare’s new intellectual product, Anthem, was shown off in detail during today’s Microsoft E3 conference.
Anthem is a shared world action-RPG that may seem familiar to many fans as closely resembling Destiny. We’ve seen titles in the past previously try to topple the Destiny juggernaut (we’re looking at you The Division) but none of them could come close to matching what makes Destiny a good game. The team at EA and BioWare look be the next group to take a crack at that Destiny-style gameplay.
“Our developers at BioWare have been creating something special, said Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President of EA Worldwide Studios. “We’re pushing Frostbite to new heights, developing a game unlike anything EA has ever made before. We’re telling a new story, creating a social, co-operative experience, and putting it in a contiguous open world that is dynamic and will be ever-changing for years to come.”
In Anthem, up to four players can team up to take on the challenges that will be found in the world. Players will be able to customize their Javelin exosuits with new weapons and abilities that are earned throughout the game. The game sounds loot-driven, which isn’t uncommon for an RPG. We did get to check out a legendary weapon, Jarra’s Wrath, from the trailer so we can confirm the weapons will have different stats and level requirements. We don’t know much more about the new title outside of these few details and what was shown in the trailer that was shown at Microsoft’s E3 conference.
The game looks beautiful, one of the many benefits of the Xbox One X and 4K televisions. From the gameplay trailer, we see the user interface is very similar to Mass Effect: Andromeda, another BioWare title, and the game rewards the player for exploration by giving them experience for finding new areas. We can’t confirm if the game is playable solo but it does look geared to having a full squad of four players. Games like The Division, Destiny and even BioWare’s own MMO title, Star Wars: The Old Republic, are mostly playable solo so we’d be surprised if that isn’t the situation here too.
Since Anthem was shown off running on Xbox One X hardware, could that mean an exclusivity deal is coming with Microsoft? Destiny and now Destiny 2 have a partnership with Sony and PlayStation that will send exclusive items to PS4 players before those items are available for Xbox One and PC players. It’s very possible EA and BioWare partnered with Microsoft this time around to give Xbox players some exclusive items for Anthem. Destiny has PlayStation and Anthem might have Xbox, it sounds interesting to us.
