The announcement of the Xbox One X was today and Microsoft is calling it the most powerful console ever built, but just how powerful is it? We’re going to take a look at the complete Xbox One X specs, formally Project Scorpio, and compare them to the second most powerful console on the market, the PS4 Pro.
Microsoft has the console to deliver Sony some serious body blows, but will it be enough? Let’s check out the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro side by side.
Spec | Xbox One X | PS4 Pro |
Price | $499 | $399 |
CPU | Custom x86 CPU @ 2.3 Ghz, 8 Cores | Custom AMD “Jaguar” CPU @ 2.1Ghz |
GPU | Custom AMD “Polaris” GPU, 6 TFLOPS | Custom AMD “Polaris” GPU, 4.2 TFLOPS |
Memory | 12 GB GDDR5 | 8GB GDDR5 |
Internal Storage | 1TB HDD | 1 TB HDD |
Optical Disk Drive | 4K UHD Blu-Ray | Blu-Ray/DVD |
The Xbox One X boasts a more powerful GPU and features more memory which is what will ultimately set it apart from the PS4 Pro. The Xbox One X has 12 GB of RAM available, with 9 GBs unlocked for gaming, more than the PS4 Pro has total. The CPU is also clocked just a tad bit higher which will give an increase in performance.
The biggest change will come with the increased GPU power. With the Xbox One X advertising full-4K gaming, it is important for the GPU to be up to the challenge. As we’ve seen with Forza Motorsport, the console is capable of running games in 4K/60 FPS but we likely won’t see every game running at the performance level. Forza is a title Microsoft develops in house so they are able to tweak it enough so it fully takes advantage of the console’s hardware. When we start to see third-party titles running at 4K/60 FPS, then we’ll know the Xbox One X is the real deal.
Sony’s advantage comes with the price point, coming in at a full hundred dollars cheaper than the new Xbox. Price comes into play a lot with consumers and the PS4 Pro is still a console that is perfectly capable of playing games with a great level of performance. Sony also features a strong first-party lineup of exclusive titles that Microsoft just can’t match at the moment. For every Halo, Gears of War and Forza, Sony can match that with Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona, MLB The Show and the list goes on.
If you’re looking mostly at third-party titles, such as Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed, it looks like the Xbox One X will be your console if you’re in the market for a new one. If you want a quality lineup of exclusive titles, you may want to take a look at the PS4 Pro.
The delay of Crackdown 3 has left us with no notable first-party titles going into the release of the console so that is pretty troubling for the console. Microsoft has announced the Xbox One X is the company’s fastest-selling Xbox pre-order ever so that isn’t stopping fans from checking out the new hardware. Now we just need Microsoft to deliver some titles.
