Fortnite: Battle Royale: 5 Tips For Building

Fortnite: Battle Royale ditches the realism seen in other battle royale shooters such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and instead goes for a more arcadey feeling game that still captures the essence of a battle royale game but gives it some twists.

As Fortnite: Battle Royale continues to grow and receive updates, more and more players will enter the fray so it’s important to stay ahead of the curve and feast on the newbies while you can.

We’re going to take a look at one of the things that separates Fortnite from its competition and that’s the building aspect of it. Most battle royale games feature the mayhem found in this game but none of them feature a building part of it.

Here are five tips to help you become a master builder in Fortnite: Battle Royale.

1. Break Down Everything

One of the most important things to do in Fortnite is to build up your material stockpile. You have your wood, brick and metal that you’ll want to have a lot of at all times. Wood is the weakest of the three but is the easiest to find. Metal will be the strongest of the three materials and you’ll find that from cars and pretty much everything at Flush Factory.

As the game nears its conclusion, having building supplies will make or break your success as pretty much every surviving player will be fighting to build up some kind of defense around them. This is where having an endless supply of materials comes in handy.

One thing that is not worth breaking down is the large shipping container. Those containers take a long time to break down and reward the player with very little metal in return. We’re talking about the ones you find at Dusty Depot.

2. Take The High Ground Whenever Possible

It may be a meme by this point but it is also an effective strategy. If you’re fighting an enemy team, wouldn’t you rather be at the top of the mountain versus the bottom of it? Having the high ground will even allow you to peak over in the tops of enemy bases and get the jump on them that way.

If you’re lucky enough, you might have an idea of where the map will shrink down to and you’ll have a chance to get a base built before anybody is in the area. Few things are scarier than seeing a giant tower waiting for you after you finish a firefight or narrowly escape the storm.

You can also turn the tables on an opponent by building steps up to the opponent’s base. If they are distracted by another group, you actually have a good chance at taking the base over if you’re quick and sneaky enough. This actually leads into the next point.

3. Build Stairs Often

Floating down in style.

Stairs will certainly be an important thing to master if you want to continually have success in Fortnite: Battle Royale. Stairs will help you reach points that are otherwise unreachable such as high up in a mountain or assaulting an enemy base.

Stairs also provide good cover and act as walls you can climb so they have dual roles. Keep in mind that wood stairs will be the easiest to build but are also the weakest so enemies can shoot them down a lot easier. Remember that structures can’t float in this game so if you lose your base you lose everything.

It’s hard to defend against a stairs attack. Just remember that structures are at their most vulnerable within the few moments of construction, if your enemy is aware of what’s going on, it can create doom for you. To combat this you can either build wider stairs or just hope for the best.

4. Fortify The Base of Your Structure

Even though you’re probably excited to start building right away, you need to make sure you have a strong foundation before you do so. Remember, if someone takes out the base of your structure, the whole thing will come crumbling down.

The best recommendation is to either build off an existing structure or use metal as your base. Using wood as the foundation is easy but will also be fodder for grenades and bullets, causing everything to topple down.

To further fortify your base, you can choose to throw up walls on the inside of your structure on the ground floor. Remember, all you need is just one thing holding your base up.

5. Don’t Waste Your Materials Early On

With the map constantly shrinking on you, it’s important not to invest your resources into one spot all at once. It can be a lot of fun to build up a base as soon as you can but it also is not a lot of fun to leave that base behind because you have to move.

Instead, you should focus on gathering resources until the circle gets to be small enough where a base will be necessary. You likely won’t be building any sprawling bases this way but you will have a lot of resources to build up some sort of defense.

If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to pinpoint where the map will shrink and possibly get a base built before anyone else arrives there. With there being no vehicles in this game, this may require a lot of walking.
