Drake and Kendrick Lamar are two of hip-hop’s reigning superstars. Over the past few years, however, they have also been the genre’s most discussed feud, sparking conversation as to which one is the better artist.
Initially, Drake and Lamar were supportive of each another’s career. It was Drake who took the Compton emcee on his Club Paradise Tour in 2012, and gave him a guest verse on his Grammy-winning album Take Care. Lamar, in turn, gave Drake a guest spot on his debut album Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City. Everything was kosher until Lamar appeared on the 2013 song “Control,” where he claimed himself superior to all other emcees working today, including J. Cole, Meek Mill, and, most notably, Drizzy. Listen below.
Since then, Drake and Lamar have thrown subliminal disses at one another on a yearly basis. “The Language,” “Darkside /Gone,” “The Heart Part 4,” the list of songs goes on and on. But things actually seemed to take a turn for the better on Sunday night (April 30th), as Drake showed love to Lamar and his latest album DAMN. The “Fake Love” rapper posted a screenshot of the album charts for the past week, in which Lamar’s album surpassed Drake’s playlist, More Life, in units sold. “Amazing to see our music moving!!!” he wrote in the caption, alongside plenty of prayer emojis that prove there aren’t any hard feelings.
While its far from the love that they showed earlier in their career, this social media display is definitely a step in the right direction. Furthermore, rumors have already begun to surface that Drake and Lamar could be collaborating on new music together for DJ Khaled‘s upcoming album Grateful. According to a screenshot taken by DJ Akademiks, a fan commented on Khaled’s latest single, “I’m The One,” asking what could be done to top such an impressive list of artists on the same song: “how do you follow that up?”
Lead Way Music seemed to think that a collaboration between Drake, Lamar and J. Cole would do the trick– which Drizzy himself then liked. Khaled responded to the dream lineup by saying “Be ready!” All three emcees appeared on Khaled’s last release, Major Key, in 2016.
Do you think Drake and Kendrick Lamar have actually squashed their feud?
