Hurricane Sandy Forces Evacuation of HMS Bounty; 2 Sailors Missing

HMS Bounty, the replica sailing ship built for Marlon Brando’s Mutiny on the Bounty and featured in Pirates of the Caribbean, is bobbing along as a ghost ship after the massive swells of Hurricane Sandy forced its evacuation off the coast of North Carolina.

The Coast Guard rescued 14 crew members from the iconic three-mast ship, but two are still missing as Sandy bears down on America’s East Coast.

The 180-foot-long tall ship was sailing south from Connecticut to Florida when it failed to dodge the massive superstorm. Featured in two Pirates movies, Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, it was built for Mutiny on the Bounty, based on the true story of Fletcher Christian‘s infamous overthrow of Captain William Bligh in 1789.
