Bodies of Two Boys Killed in Staten Island by Hurricane Sandy Found

The bodies of two young boys, one two-year-old and one four-year-old, were found on Thursday after being taken from the arms of their mother during Hurricane Sandy. The boys disappeared in the New York borough of Staten Island on Monday when waves caused by storm surges crashed into the mother’s SUV while driving, reports NBC News. Their bodies were found in a marshy area near where they disappeared from their mother’s arms, police say.

A missing husband and wife from Staten Island were also found dead on Thursday. The official death toll blamed on Hurricane Sandy seems to rise every second with the latest toll reaching nearly 100. The rising toll comes as the East Coast gradually recovers from the deadly storm.

Many Staten Island residents and elected officials are complaining that there was a lack of emergency attention to the area during and after the storm. Borough President James Molinaro criticized the Red Cross for not being there when needed.

“You know, I went to a shelter Monday night after the storm. People were coming in with no socks, with no shoes,” Molinaro said. “They were in desperate need. Their housing was destroyed. They were crying. Where was the Red Cross? Isn’t that their function?”
