earthquake, New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy

As if Hurricane Sandy wasn’t bad enough, some northern New Jersey residents woke up today to a small earthquake.

The temblor had a magnitude of 2.0 and hit at 1:19 a.m., reports the Newark Star-Ledger. It hit in Ringwood, which is still dealing with downed trees and power outages. Geophysicist Jessica Turner of the National Earthquake Information Center said the quake might have made people on upper floors of a home feel shaking or see objects on their walls vibrate. She noted some people reported hearing a loud boom.

The quake, located three miles below ground, could be felt in Mahwah, Wanaque, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, West Milford and Paterson. Police in Ringwood said there are no reported damages.

The last earthquake in New Jersey had a 2.2 magnitude and was recorded in February 2010.
