Jovan Belcher Murder-Suicide: Top 10 Facts You Need to Know

Linebacker Jovan Belcher, 25, has been identified as the Kansas City Chiefs player who today killed the mother of his child, Kasandra Michelle Perkins, at home and then drove to the team’s practice facility and killed himself.

Here’s what you should know:


1. He Shot Himself in Front of His Head Coach and GM

Head Coach Romeo Crennel and GM Scott Pioli.


Head Coach Romeo Crennel, GM Scott Pioli and other Kansas City Chiefs staff confronted Belcher when he arrived at the practice facility around 8:10 a.m. They tried to talk him down, but Belcher put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger — after thanking them. Police arrived moments later.

2. He Shot Kasandra ‘Multiple Times’

The first shooting happened at the couple’s home in the 5400 Block of Crysler Avenue in Kansas City. Police Capt. David Lindaman told the Kansas City Star:

Belcher, 25, and his girlfriend, 22, got into an argument around 7 a.m. at their home … Around 7:50 a.m., Lindaman said, Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

3. He Was Angry She Went to a Trey Songz Concert

A friend of Kasandra says Kasandra was out late on Friday night at a Trey Songz concert and Belcher was furious. They argued when she got home at 1 a.m. Apparently the fight continued in the morning.


4. His Mom Was Watching
Cops say Belcher’s mom was visiting the couple and their child and witnessed Belcher murdering Kasandra.


5. They Had a 3-Month-Old Baby

Photos from Kasandra’s Facebook page show the proud parents beaming with pride over their infant, Zoey, who was born in September.



6. Her Family Thought They Were Living in Bliss

Unnamed family members tell TMZ that they thought everything was fine:

Jovan and Kasandra always seemed to be in love. In fact, we’re told when Kasandra got pregnant, she and Jovan were “ecstatic.” The family says ever since the baby was born in September, the two couldn’t have seemed happier together. The 22-year-old’s family says they have NO IDEA why the relationship took a tragic turn

Kasandra is from Texas but moved to Missouri to live with Jovan.


7. The Chiefs Will Still Play Tomorrow

Arrowhead Stadium was placed on Lockdown, and tomorrow’s game was in doubt. The NFL later told the Carolina Panthers to fly in as scheduled to play the Chiefs on Sunday. Before the tragedy, the Panthers were 3-point favorites. The Chiefs are having a woeful season, with a 1-10 record.


8. Belcher’s ‘Agent’ is Tweeting in His Name

A new Twitter account claiming to be from Belcher’s agent is soliciting re-tweets, supposedly in exchange for donations to support suicide prevention and to support Belcher’s infant daughter. Another fake account claiming to be NBA star Andrew Bynum said he’ll double the donations. That was enough to get the real Jerry Rice to fall for it:


9. Belcher Was an Undrafted Gem

Belcher grew up in Long Island and played college ball at U Maine. He went undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft, but the Chiefs scooped him up and he became a starter in his rookie season.

10. It’s the Chiefs’ Second Murder-Suicide this Season

A Chiefs employee named Luis Angel Roberson Rodriquez, who worked in stadium ops, killed himself and his girlfriend on Labor Day at the Tampa Airport.
