Pope Francis made history when he flew by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo, the new residence of his predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, to meet the man whose job he stole.

1. The Two Prayed Together
When Benedict offered Pope Francis the traditional kneeling sport occupied by the pope, Francis insisted they share saying, “we’re brothers.”
2. This was not a Secret Meeting
Outside of the villa where Benedict now lives, residents and media packed the square to try to catch a glimpse of the popes.
3. Castel Gandolfo is Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s Current Home
Former Pope Benedict has been living in Castel Gandolfo, the traditional papal summer villa, since February 28th when he resigned as pontiff. He will return to the Vatican in a few months to live out his final days in silent prayer in a converted monastery.
