For the first time in 100 years, Canada will be competing in the World Group semifinals thanks to Toronto’s Milos Raonic.

The 22-year-old Raonic defeated Italy’s Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinal match at the Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver on Sunday.

“What a great feeling,” he tweeted after the match.

Raonic’s latest win brings his personal winning streak of Davis Cup singles matches to seven straight, with an overall record for Canada of 12-4, 10-3 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.

Even Prime Minister Stephen Harper shared in the excitement, tweeting: “What an exciting time for tennis in Canada!”

The Davis Cup is the largest annual international team event in men’s tennis.

“I’m looking forward to the next series in Serbia,” Raonic said, “It’s going to be an exciting opportunity.”

Canada will take on Serbia in the World Group semifinals in September, whose team includes the world’s top player, Novak Djokovic.
