Either Sharknado is really happening or someone played a sick prank on Subway commuters.
A dead shark was discovered on a Queens-bound subway car in New York City early Wednesday morning, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed. A conductor aboard a Queens-bound N train first reported that there was a shark aboard one of the rail cars around 12:30 a.m.
“Upon arrival at Ditmars Boulevard, a train service supervisor reported the shark was dead and he placed it in a garbage bag and disposed of it in the trash,” said MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz.
Tipster Mary M. told the Gothamist that she found the shark under the seats of the car after boarding at 34th street shortly after midnight.
“I board a car that’s not terribly full and as soon as I enter, a stench hits my nose,” Mary wrote. “It’s not the typical urine/trash smell, it’s…fishy? I look down to the end of the car to see a dead shark on the floor. I think I stood there for a good minute just staring, thinking ‘Is this for real?! Oh come ON, NYC!'”
There is no suspect for the prank, but the MTA says they have better things to do then to track the culprit down. Some joked that it looks like a promo for Shark Week, which just so happens to be this week, but The Discovery Channel denied any involvement.
“Shark Week is all about conservation, so it deeply saddens us that someone would think that this was funny or in any way connected to our celebration of sharks, ” wrote Laurie Goldberg, executive vice-president of PR for the Discovery Channel, in an email to Metro.
