Gerald Read, Navy Yard Victim: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Gerald Read, 58, is one of the many ex-military members who were killed during the tragic shooting at the U.S. Navy Yard on Monday morning. He was a family man who dedicated much of his life to studying and service to his country.

Here is what you need to know:


1. Some of Read’s Family Will Not Speak to the Press

Of all of the twelve victims who lost their lives this week, the least is known about the Gerald Read, the 58-year-old long-time Navy man.

The AP reports that Read’s son-in-law, Michael Giffin, said that they family was not ready to speak. The AP reports Giffin saying, “We’re still trying to gather our thoughts.”


2. He Served in the Army for Almost 30 Years

Local Washington D.C. news stations WJLA reports that after attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he served in the military from 1977 to 2006.

The Washington Post reports that Read served in Korea and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he served at Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia, helping to keep troops overseas supplied.

For the last few years Read served with the Navy Sea Systems Command.


3. He Was a Civil War Buff

Cathy Read, Gerald’s wife, recounted his love of reading and his love of and knowledge of the civil war are well documented.

During his time in the military Read earned two master’s degrees.


4. He was Married for 35 Years

Gerald and his wife Cathy met while in college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Cathy, who spoke to the Washington Post, said she texted her husband of 35 years the morning of the shooting, but was not worried until hours passed without a response.

Cathy described her husband as, “totally reliable, read, really, solid,” and his neighbor, Carole Willis, said, “he was just the most dependable, non-questioning person.”


5. He is Survived By a Wife, Daughter, and Three Granddaughters

Read is survived by his wife Cathy, his daughter Jessica, three grandchildren. Read also helped rescue animals and cared for three beloved labs, an Irish Setter, and two cats.
