What is Bombogenesis?

The buzz word for the blizzard 2015, Winter Storm Juno, is “bombogenesis.” But what is bombogenesis and how will it affect the Northeast?

Bombogenesis is the second stage in storm building weather phenomena. The first stage is “cyclogenesis” and it means just that, the beginning of a cyclone.

So why is it called “bomb”-ogensis?

Weather.com explains:

“Bombs are so-named because of the rapidity with which they develop, which evokes explosiveness, and the power that they usually attain once they have gone through the intensification phase specified in the definition (a central pressure drop of at least 24 millibars, or 24 mbars, in 24 hours).”

These “bombs” strengthen and are responsible for “dropping” heavy snow. Strong winds build to drive them along, too.
