Controlled Chaos — Almost 10,000 Sold After ‘Shark Tank’: Interview With Owner

Controlled Chaos entered the Shark Tank in Season 7 debuting their creme to enhance curly hair by eliminating frizz and adding shine.

Back when the show aired in January, we interviewed founder and owner Alanna York about her products that are sulfate and paraben free, use ingredients sourced from US growers, and are packaged in BPA-free bottles. As the show reruns on March 25, we caught up with her again to see how the business has grown after leaving the Tank.

Since her deal with Lori, the company’s website has been redesigned, sales, administrative and marketing staff have been hired, and a distribution center has been created. The product itself has also been improved, and is now gluten free and sold in sleek new packaging.

York, who learned to embrace the curly hair that caused her grief as a child, loves the fact that her creation is making customers happy. “The reviews and feedback we get about how this product really does change the way people feel about themselves on a daily basis are what I live for,” she said. Here’s what else she told us about…

Sales Since ‘Shark Tank’

We have sold almost 10,000 units of Controlled Chaos Curl Creme! Plus, thousands more of our other products which we were, sadly, considering discontinuing, but the response has been overwhelmingly positive so we are working on rebranding the entire line.

Lori’s Encouragement

Lori and her team have been helpful through this process but, as you can imagine, the Sharks are very busy people! As an entrepreneur, I expected to continue to do much of what I’ve been doing on my own, but now with her recommendations. She and her team have always been responsive when I have questions. I heard from Lori today actually, she congratulated me on our episode’s re-airing. I’m excited to see what happens next.

Advice for Future ‘Tank’ Contestants- ‘Be TV-Material’

I felt super silly and didn’t come off as professional as I would have liked to, but if it gets you the win, you gotta go for it! I think there is so much more to it than being passionate about your business or product. They choose to put you on TV for other reasons too, so I had that in mind when Maureen and I were clowning around a bit.

Plans to ‘Take Over the Curl World’

We are currently talking with a few Canadian distributors, and are looking forward to regaining distribution channels we had lost because we were unable to keep up with production before. Online sales have sky-rocketed and we continue to gain tons of new feverish fans every day. We plan on taking over the curl world with Controlled Chaos Curl Crème and educating more stylists to offer the Controlled Chaos haircut to guests at their salons. I’m also excited to say that my other business is expanding! My Portland-based salon and spa is growing rapidly, whether or not a result of Shark Tank, and I’m looking forward to renovating and rejuvenating that brand as well.
